Based on the Ford Five Hundred/Mercury Montego sedan, the Freestyle combines traits of a station wagon and SUV. Front- and all-wheel-drive versions are available. All three rows of seats offer sufficient space for adults. Cabin access and visibility are commendable. The ride is firm but comfortable. Routine handling is confident, although the Freestyle's tail tended to slide a bit too easily in our avoidance maneuver. Unfortunately, stability control is not available. The 3.0-liter, 203-hp V6 provides adequate performance in the CVT-equipped AWD model and returns 18 mpg overall. Engine noise is pronounced when accelerating.
