Genesis, Hyundai Motor Group’s upscale brand, competes with well-established luxury automakers, but its vehicles often cost less than European equivalents. The brand sells a variety of sedans and SUVs, including several EVs. In Consumer Reports’ tests, Genesis models have impressed. Their ride and handling are balanced, fit and finish is excellent, and meaningful driver assistance systems are usually standard. Unfortunately, the once easy-to-use controls in earlier models have become more complicated. Reliability varies: some models have dropped to below average reliability ratings, while others achieved average reliability, enough to earn Consumer Reports’ recommendations.
The GV70 more than holds its own in the compact luxury SUV segment. It's a legitimate competitor to the Audi Q5 and BMW X3. The standard 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is punchy and polished and yields competitive fuel economy. The optional more powerful 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 is even smoother, but frivolous. The GV70 is taut and agile and handles more like a sports sedan than an SUV. It steers with precision, making it feel sporty and enjoyable to drive. The ride is pliant and composed. AWD is standard. The lavishly furnished cabin is impressive and the seats are comfortable and supportive. Despite the swoopy styling, rear seat room is decent but rear visibility is hampered. Unfortunately, the controls are very unintuitive and distracting, including the rotary gear selector. Many active safety and driving assist features are standard.
