Lexus, Toyota’s upscale sub-brand, is among the few luxury automakers that successfully merges technologically-advanced designs with consistently great reliability. Interiors are quiet and finished with finely-crafted materials. The engines are generally smooth and powerful. Many of its cars and SUVs are available with more fuel-efficient hybrid powertrains. Lexus continues to sell sedans, with its ES, IS, and top-shelf LS models. Most of its SUVs have done well in our testing, including the NX, RX, and TX. The brand’s first all-electric vehicle, the RZ, is a luxury version of the Toyota bZ4X EV. Lexus also sells two-door coupes and convertibles, the RC and LC. Multiple Lexus models have earned Consumer Reports’ recommendation for used cars.
Lexus is filling a big hole in its SUV line with the all-new TX, a three-row model that shares its dimensions and many mechanical bits with the new Toyota Grand Highlander. Sized a notch up from the RX, the boxy TX has two main powertrains: a 350 with a 275-hp turbo four-cylinder, a 500h with a smooth and powerful 366-hp turbo four-cylinder hybrid. The 500h+, a 404-hp V6 plug-in hybrid with 33 miles of electric-only range, is also available. The TX has a luxurious interior but the gear selector and interior door handles are unintuitive. The cabin has spacious accommodations for all three rows, and tremendous cargo-toting abilities when the third row is folded. The center row can be configured as a bench seat or captain's chairs. The standard Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 bundles a full suite of active safety and driver assistance features, including LCA, ACC, and auto lane change.
