2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Plug-in Hybrid

The Jeep Wrangler has poor fuel economy, wind noise, an uncomfortable interior, and reliability scores near the bottom of Consumer Reports’ rankings. Despite those results, the Wrangler has been popular for decades. Next to endless options of aerodynamic compact SUVs, its boxy, military-inspired design makes it timeless and charming. It’s also especially capable off-road, and is available as a pickup truck. The Wrangler’s rugged appeal benefits the rest of Jeep’s lineup of small, medium, and large SUVs. The Cherokee and Wagoneer, despite their name’s historical appeal, usually score low on Consumer Reports’ customer satisfaction surveys. However, shoppers drawn to the Jeep name who are comfortable with sacrificing handling and fuel economy for three-row capacity can consider the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. Low reliability scores across the brand make it difficult to recommend buying a used Jeep.

The Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid is badged as a 4xe. It can cover about 25 miles of electric driving range before transitioning into a hybrid operation. The 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that comes with the 4xe has some punch and it feels refined. It takes about two and a half hours to charge the battery. Fuel economy as a hybrid is estimated to be 23 mpg combined by the EPA. We measured 21 mpg overall with the standard 3.6-liter V6. Like the regular Grand Cherokee, handling is sound and secure, brake pedal feel is firm and inspires confidence, and the ride is firm yet absorbent, particularly with the smaller 18-inch tires. Off-road seekers will want the Trailhawk version with its off-road modes and height adjustable suspension. The latest Uconnect 5 infotainment system has many features and levels of customization but requires an initial learning curve. AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection, AEB highway, BSW, and RCTW are standard.
