The X5 plug-in hybrid is an impressive vehicle. It got an update for the 2024 model year that increased its battery size and power. It is EPA-rated for covering 39 miles on electric power before transitioning to regular hybrid operation in which it is rated to consume 22 mpg. Drivers can lock the electric mode if the battery charge is sufficient. In order to unleash full power, both the electric drive and the smooth and punchy 3.0-liter turbo Six work in concert. Like the rest of the X5 line, the screen now houses houses BMW's latest iDrive 8 infotainment system. Many of the physical climate controls are now on the touchscreen, which is less convenient. The ride is super comfortable and impressively steady and composed. Handling is very competent. The impeccably finished, luxurious cabin is whisper-quiet, and the seats are all-day comfortable. Standard active safety features include AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection, BSW, and RCTW. The optional Driving Assist Pro includes adaptive cruise control, lane centering and the ability to change lanes on its own.Redesigned for 2021, the X5 xDrive45e greatly enhances performance over the previous X5 xDrive40e with a 389-hp, 3.0-liter 6-cylinder turbocharged engine, a bump of 81 hp over the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine. The high-voltage battery grows to 24 kWh, up from the previous 12 kWh capacity which doubles the electric-only range to an EPA estimated 30-mile.
