If you like the Crown, but wish it could carry a bit more people and cargo, the Crown Signia SUV just may be the answer, splitting the difference between the Crown sedan and a Highlander Hybrid SUV. There is a single powertrain: a 243-hp, 2.5-liter hybrid four-cylinder engine matched to continuously variable transmission. All-wheel drive is standard. The interior design mirrors the Crown, with a digital instrument panel and 12.3-inch infotainment screen. Fuel economy is excellent, at 37 mpg overall in our tests. A 530-mile cruising range is an added bonus. The car can propel itself on electric power alone at low urban speeds, but quick acceleration elicits pronounced engine noise. The ride is comfortable and controlled, and handling is competent and secure. The interior is tasteful, the front seats are very comfortable, and the rear seat is reasonably roomy. There are two trim levels, XLE and Limited, that define elements such as stereo grade (6 vs. 11 speakers), upholstery, and other features. Toyota's latest full suite of active safety and driver assist feature is standard.
