The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class has received its most comprehensive update in decades -- though you might never guess it from the square-shaped exterior. A 416-hp twin-turbo V8 powers the base model G550. A more powerful AMG G63 version uses the same V8 turbo engine that generates 577 hp. Both engines are paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard, and a range of off-road biased gear ratios and locking differentials are available. The solid front axle has been replaced by an independent suspension to improve ride and handling. A solid rear axle remains. The cabin has been brought into the 21st century. The dials, vents, and infotainment system now mirror what a Mercedes customer would find in a typical E-Class or S-Class luxury sedan. All the important safety gear, such as automatic emergency braking and forward-collision warning, are standard. New for 2025 is an all-electric G580 with 579 hp.
