The Forester, a perennial high-scorer in CR's compact SUV ratings, will be available for the first time in hybrid form. An electric motor backed by a lithium-ion battery will augment its 2.5-liter flat-four engine. That hybrid powertrain increases horsepower to 194 compared with 180 for the regular Forester. The Forester Hybrid is EPA-rated at 35 mpg combined. That figure is slightly lower than the primary competitors, but it marks a notable improvement over the 29 mpg overall that we recorded on the regular Forester we tested. In addition to the EyeSight suite of active safety and driver assistance features that is standard on all Foresters, the Hybrid adds BSW and RCTW.

We expect the 2025 Forester Hybrid to be much more reliable than other new cars. This prediction is based on Subaru's brand history and the non-hybrid Forester.
