Most Mazdas are affordable, fun to drive, and look good inside and out. Many of its crossovers, SUVs, and sedans have earned Consumer Reports’ recommendations and above-average reliability ratings. Used Mazdas are usually a good option for an affordable pre-owned car. Mazda’s two- and three-row SUVs, identified by CX in the name, are consistently near the top of our ratings. Some Mazdas are available as plug-in hybrids that are capable of useful amounts of electric-only driving range. Most Mazdas achieve solid, but not exceptional fuel economy. Though sports cars are less popular now than decades before, Mazda still sells the MX-5 Miata, one of the best of the few remaining enthusiast cars.
The original MPV was a crude rear-drive minivan. It could seat up to seven, although the raised rear floor and permanently-attached third seat limited its versatility. After a brief hiatus, the MPV has been reintroduced and revamped for 2000. A front-wheel-drive design based loosely on the 626 sedan replaces the trucklike, rear-drive layout. The new van has two sliding rear doors instead of the earlier swing-out variety and a first side windows that retract into the doors. The interior is narrower than in other minivans, but has some clever details and is nicely finished. The third-row seat folds into the floor like the Honda Odyssey's. The MPV is one of the few minivans that offer front side-impact air bags. It's also quiet and rides fairly well, and its compact size makes it easy to park. Handling is secure and the brakes are very good. Its Ford V6 is neither refined nor energetic.
