The freshened Model Y SUV implements the same changes we saw in the revamped Model 3 sedan: A more compliant (though still quite firm) ride, acoustic glass for a quieter cabin, upgraded interior materials, and an 8-inch touchscreen for rear passengers. Like the previous Model Y, it still benefits from thrilling acceleration from its electric motors, nimble handling, and a long driving range. Sadly, the last Model Y's already confounding controls have become even more distracting in the updated version. We recorded 331 miles during our 70-mph highway-range test of the AWD version with the long-range battery, which is impressive. Home charging is on the speedy side, at about 42 miles of range gained per hour. The front seats are supportive and comfortable, and the rear bench is roomy. The front trunk and rear underfloor storage well serve as useful cargo areas. Most interior tasks--even including the gear selector, and adjusting the dash vents and side mirrors--are handled through the center touchscreen.
