2022 Porsche 718 Boxster

Since the early 2000s, the Porsche lineup has expanded to include practical performance cars, including the Panamera sedan and wagon, Cayenne midsized SUV, Macan compact SUV, and Taycan EV. Every Porsche we’ve tested has achieved stellar road-test and owner satisfaction scores, thanks to sharp handling, a controlled ride, superb braking performance, and beautifully crafted interiors. Although Consumer Reports’ survey data shows that its vehicles can be expensive to maintain and repair, the brand tends to do well in our reliability rankings. Porsche’s rich history and prestige adds to the appeal. Even today, the name Porsche brings to mind the rear-engine 911, which rightfully remains a dream sports car for generations of enthusiasts. For less money, the mid-engined 718 Boxster roadster and Cayman coupe offer some of the most superb driving experiences possible.

For 2017, Porsche's redesigned Boxster roadster is renamed 718 Boxster. It offers turbocharged 2.0- and 2.5-liter four-cylinder engines, replacing the previous Sixes. Most 718s come with a seven-speed automated manual, which impersonates a manually shifted gearbox quite well. A manual is also available. Chopping off two cylinders brought more readily available power and a throaty thrum, but at the expense of Porsche's high-revving zing. Handling is superlative with impressive grip and balance, which make the car super-responsive and fun to drive. The ride is very firm but not too punishing. The cabin has a premium ambience, but the button overload takes getting used to. Opening or closing the well-insulated power top takes 10 seconds, even on the move up to 43 mph. The front trunk is a bonus. Changes for 2020 included a new 718 Spyder model powered by a 414-hp, 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine with a sportier suspension tuning.
