Most Mazdas are affordable, fun to drive, and look good inside and out. Many of its crossovers, SUVs, and sedans have earned Consumer Reports’ recommendations and above-average reliability ratings. Used Mazdas are usually a good option for an affordable pre-owned car. Mazda’s two- and three-row SUVs, identified by CX in the name, are consistently near the top of our ratings. Some Mazdas are available as plug-in hybrids that are capable of useful amounts of electric-only driving range. Most Mazdas achieve solid, but not exceptional fuel economy. Though sports cars are less popular now than decades before, Mazda still sells the MX-5 Miata, one of the best of the few remaining enthusiast cars.
Replacing the Mazda CX-9, the three-row CX-90 is an attempt to move the brand upscale with its new rear-wheel-drive based platform, potent inline six-cylinder engine, and optional plug-in hybrid. All-wheel drive is standard. The SUV is available with an all-new 280- or 340-horsepower 3.3-liter six-cylinder turbocharged engine--both are potent and sound good. We got 24 mpg overall with the 280 hp version. A plug-in hybrid, which comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a 17.8 kWh battery, is also available and has a claimed EV range of 26 miles. Handling is taut and agile, the ride is firm and composed but higher trims that come with 21-inch wheels and tires make the ride too stiff. The cabin is roomy but controls aren't so intuitive. The front seats are supportive and the driving position is well sorted. Both seven- and eight-passenger seating configurations are available. A comprehensive suite of active safety features is standard, including ACC for 2025 models.
