2024 Mazda CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid

Most Mazdas are affordable, fun to drive, and look good inside and out. Many of its crossovers, SUVs, and sedans have earned Consumer Reports’ recommendations and above-average reliability ratings. Used Mazdas are usually a good option for an affordable pre-owned car. Mazda’s two- and three-row SUVs, identified by CX in the name, are consistently near the top of our ratings. Some Mazdas are available as plug-in hybrids that are capable of useful amounts of electric-only driving range. Most Mazdas achieve solid, but not exceptional fuel economy. Though sports cars are less popular now than decades before, Mazda still sells the MX-5 Miata, one of the best of the few remaining enthusiast cars.

In addition to the potent straight-six turbo engine, the new three-row Mazda CX-90 also offers a plug-in hybrid version, much like some European SUVs and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. All-wheel drive is standard. The plug-in hybrid employs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, a 17.8 kWh battery and an electric drive that give it an EPA EV range of 26 miles. After that, it transitions to regular hybrid operation and gets an estimated fuel economy of 25 mpg combined. Note that our regular CX-90 with the turbo six engine got 24 mpg overall. The transition from gas to electric power and vice versa is not the smoothest, however. Handling is taut and agile, the ride is firm and composed, but unless you get the base Preferred trim, all other versions come with 21-inch wheels and tires that make the ride too stiff. The cabin is roomy but controls are not all that intuitive. The front seats are supportive and the driving position is well sorted. Both seven- and eight-passenger seating configurations are available. A comprehensive suite of active safety features is standard, including ACC for 2025 models.
