The overview
This three-row electric SUV has an EPA-rated range of just under 300 to roughly 400 miles, depending on battery and tire size. The ride is too stiff, electric-motor whine is noticeable at low speeds, and the regenerative braking is too strong, which makes it difficult to drive the SUV smoothly. The interior is uncluttered, but the controls are extremely distracting because almost every task, including adjusting the air vents, is done through the touchscreen. A front trunk adds cargo space. DC fast charging is supposedly capable of a max acceptance rate of 200 kilowatts, but we haven't seen anywhere close to that. Rivian gave its R1S three-row electric SUV a freshening for 2025. Improvements included a smoother powertrain, a slightly more absorbent ride, and a quieter cabin. Starting in 2025, the R1S came standard with a direct driver monitoring system. Rivian's Universal Hands-Free active driving assistance is available for Gen 2 models.

Behind the data
Latest source update: September 11, 2026
Vehicle summaries, specifications, pricing and ratings come from Consumer Reports vehicle records. Auto Guide groups these records by model and reported generation start year.
Available years are listed explicitly. Gaps do not imply that a model was discontinued. Prices are source estimates, not live offers. No first-hand road test by Auto Guide is claimed.
